Meritra Fly Intaglio Drop Earrings 18K Gold | Tony White
The Meritra Earrings are a signed work by celebrated Sydney jeweller Tony White (1942–2020), the architect turned artist whose one-of-a-kind jewels are held in collections around the world. Five golden flies cascade down each earring in 18K yellow gold, suspending a swinging drop of teal glass intaglio moulded with Egyptian Revival motifs.
Echoing the golden flies once awarded for valour in ancient Egypt, she carries White's love of the ancient world and unusual finds. Formerly in a private New South Wales collection, she now awaits her next chapter, a rare piece of Australian jewellery history to be worn and treasured.
NOTE: Tony White graduated in architecture from Sydney University in 1965 and, largely self-taught, turned to jewellery full-time in 1971. He travelled widely through Africa, Asia, Europe and America gathering materials, and favoured carved glass, coloured stones and baroque pearls over formal diamond jewellery. His pieces are signed "WHITE". These are a limited run with only two or even one ever made.
